Sustainability at DropWorks Rum

A modern rum distillery shaped by locality, efficiency and lower waste.

DropWorks was designed from the ground up with sustainability embedded across production, packaging, distribution and serves.

The result is exceptional, sustainable rum with a lighter footprint, underpinned by practical environmental thinking at every stage of the operation.

Embedded from day one

Creating a world-class rum distillery from scratch gives us the ability to make sustainability part of the operating model, not an add-on. DropWorks applies that thinking to energy, materials, waste reduction and local supply decisions across the business. More of our energy goes into crafting great rum, and less is wasted along the way!

PRODUCTION – Energy-efficient by design

The distillery was purpose-built using efficient technology, high-grade insulation and multiple heat exchangers to reduce energy required for heating and cooling.

RESOURCES – Circular thinking in practice

A low-energy closed-loop cooling system helps eliminate water wastage, while remaining waste is converted to biogas in an anaerobic biodigester.

DISTRIBUTION – Lower-waste packaging choices

Local lightweight bottles, recycled glass content and on-trade 5L jerry can delivery all help reduce material use and unnecessary transport impact.

Measured actions

Every improvement is rooted in the practical realities of running a modern distillery. These decisions improve efficiency while supporting a more responsible long-term operating model.

  • RENEWABLE ESTATE ENERGY – The Welbeck estate that houses the distillery runs on renewable energy generated through solar panels and biomass burners.
  • CLOSED-LOOP COOLING – A low-energy closed-loop cooling system was installed to minimise water waste in distillery operations.
  • LOCAL BOTTLE MANUFACTURE – Lightweight bottles are made in England using 70% recycled glass, supporting lower-impact sourcing and transport.
  • WASTE REUSE – Twenty percent of distillation waste is reused as dunder in the next distillation, reducing unnecessary disposal.
  • BIOGAS CONVERSION – Remaining waste is redirected to an anaerobic biodigester where it is converted into biogas.
  • SMARTER ON-TRADE SUPPLY – 5L jerry can distribution helps cut glass wastage dramatically in on-trade delivery channels.
